NOT a Domestic Goddess - Part 1

Little Fairy Cakes

Chilli Chicken

I do not profess to be a Domestic Goddess. I am far from it. My brother R is more like Nigella Lawson than I am.

I do, however, wish I could be a better cook and be abit more creative in the types of food I eat and want to cook. I am great at buying cook books but I'm not good at actually cooking any of the recipes from them. I tend to stick to the same few dishes which are quick and easy to do like Spaghetti Bolognese, Chilli Con Carne and own made up recipe of Cheesy Pepperoni.

This year I'm trying to change that. I've acquired some great cook books from cooks I admire. Nigella (of course), Ching He Hueng, and Ina Garten are my top three at the moment, and I'm determined to cook some dishes from their books this year.

To start, last night I cooked Chilli Chicken from a recipe from Ching's Chinese Food in Minutes. I have to confess, I have cooked this before and has become a favourite of AJ and mine. It is so easy to make and tastes de…

All good intentions- up in smoke

This weekend I had all the good intentions to craft. My January subscription kit from Sarahs cards arrived Saturday morning and I was so excited with it. I was all ready to do lots of layouts and cards, but for some reason I dipped very quickly into "haven't a clue what I'm going to do" mode.

My inspiration went up like a puff of smoke. Hence this weekend has been a complete wash out for craft. I'm annoyed with myself for just being really lazy. I feel like I've wasted my precious time. Time I should be doing the things I really love- like making cards and scrapbooking.

I hope I pull myself out of this lull pretty darn quickly. I hate feeling sorry for myself, but at the moment I just do.

Craving the summer

Photo taken by my brother R -Summer 2010

It has been so cold of late and although I wouldn't say I have SAD, I am really craving the spring and summer. I'm sluggish and tired at the moment and I am craving a little sun.

I'm looking forward to Spring and signs of new growth. I don't want to wake up cold and having to defrost the car any more. It's horrible to wish your life away, but hurry up Spring and Summer. The Winter has been way too long of late

My Mantra

Photo taken at World Showcase at Epcot, DisneyWorld, Florida, January 2010

Today I came across this quote by C.S Lewis and I am going use this as a Mantra this year, as without going into details, is very appropriate for me at the moment

"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream"

Photo of the Week - Serene

Photo taken- Lesley Guest in November 2010

This is a photo of Kiwi. I submitted this photo as part of the Photography course that I took last year. The reason I called the picture Serene, as it sums up how Kiwi is - she is a very serene cat.

Our Third Place

In his book The Great Good Place, Ramon Oldenburg refers to The Third Place - a place away from the first place of Home and second place of work- a place of relaxation and creativity. The Third Place is also refered to in the movie You've Got Mail

Our third place (together) is Starbucks.

We absolutely adore Starbucks. Aside from beverages, we are obsessed with Starbucks mugs - like the Christmas mugs we collect as stated in a previous blog post. We find we can relax and have sensible conversations. We consider going to Starbucks as a little luxurious treat once in a while. We used to go once a month when we were first going out. That became less often over the last year or two, but we have decided to reinstate going to Our Third Place a little more often. Hence, this afternoon we went to Starbucks for a hour and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves

Book Review of the Month 1- You'll miss me when I'm Gone

The Life and Work of Eric Morecambe - You'll miss me when I'm gone by Gary Morecambe is an affectionate tribute to Eric Morecambe written by Erics son to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Erics untimely death. (Book was released in 2009).

Over the Christmas holidays, the BBC ran a drama written by Victoria Wood called Eric and Ernie and highlighted the early years of Morecambe and Wise, and thus I decided to read this book (from my husbands collection). The book covers Eric's early years in showbusiness (as in the tv programme), his family, the Morecambe and Wise shows and movies, Eric's influences and includes many memories from people Eric knew and from many people in show business - some that worked with Eric and some who are huge fans.

The book is an easy read. It took me a couple of hours over two evenings to read and has many photos- some not previously published. I enjoyed this book. I too have fond memories of Morecambe and Wise - watching the many repeats…

Date Night

One of my wishes for 2011 is to spend some more quality time with AJ. Just the two of us. My wish is that we make time together - away from our house- and to enjoy ourselves doing something different from the norm. Hence "Date Night".

This afternoon (well being as it is a Bank Holiday in the UK), we decided to go on our date and visit the local cinema. We went to see Little Fockers - the third in the Meet the Parents franchise. I have heard a few negative reviews of this movie, but I'm very much of the ilk that you make your own opinion on such matters. Although not as good as the two previous films, AJ and I enjoyed the movie. I think Robert De Niro is just fab as Jack Byrnes and Dustin Hoffman makes me laugh too.

We decided to have something to eat after the cinema whilst we were in town also, so we had a nice meal in the local Wetherspoons, and now we are at home, snug and warm for the rest of the evening. I taped Miss Marple from last night, so we will cuddle up on the…

Books - part 1

As posted yesterday, I am planning to read a book or two each month in 2011.

Here is a list of books I am hoping to read in the first six months of this year

They are in no particular order of when I am going to read them (apart from Lian Hearn trilogy) and I may add to this list as I start to tidy up my very messy scrap room where alot of my books are kept.

They are as follows:

Standing in the Rainbow by Fannie Flagg
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
Persuasion by Jane Austen
The Life and Work of Eric Morecambe by Gary Morecambe
Tales of the Otori Trilogy - Across the Nightingale Floor, Grass for His Pillow and Brilliance of the Moon by Lian Hearn
Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyers
Chocolat by Joanne Harris
Encore Valentine by Adriana Trigiani
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I'm planning to write a summary of my thoughts about the book at the end of each month or whenever I finish the book.

Heres to Happy Reading in 2011 and Good Evening from Pickle Lan…

Firstly, let me say Happy New Year and wishing you a great 2011

What 2011 will bring me I don't know, but I'm determined to embrace life a bit better than I have been doing of late.

One thing I am absolutely sure about is that want to blog more and develop this little blog of mine. I'm a little un certain how I want to go about this but so far I've come up with a few ideas

1) Layout of the week - Every Sunday

This is because I sporadically scrapbook so in giving myself a challenge of creating a layout each week, I'm hoping itwill spur me into being a bit more creative.

2) Card of the week - Every Saturday

As above, to spur me into creating some cards and partly because I'm hoping to build up the courage to possibly sell some cards

3) Photo of the Week - Every Tuesday

I took a photography course last year and this is to challenge me to take some photos and develop my skills

4) Book of the month- end of the month

Each month I am determined to read at least one book ( and p…
